Today marks a significant milestone as The Bereavement Journey® celebrates 30 years of providing vital grief support to bereaved individuals.
Founded on 6 February 1995 at Holy Trinity Brompton, by Jane Oundjian MBE, a trained counsellor and bereaved parent, the programme offers a compassionate and structured approach to navigating loss, and is now helping many thousands find healing and hope.
A Growing National Movement
Originally 5 Sessions of talks and peer group discussion, The Bereavement Journey® was adopted by the charity AtaLoss, after Founder Yvonne Tulloch was widowed and benefitted from the material. In 2023 it was extended and published with training and support to enable churches to offer it to their communities, and has expanded in just over a year to over 400 locations across the UK, including work places, universities, retreat centres and hospitals.
Official Recognition
In 2024 The Bereavement Journey® was recognised with a UK Business Awards Care Award, acknowledging its excellence as a community support initiative. And on 27th January 2025 it was further acknowledged in Parliament through an Early Day Motion proposed by Ruth Jones MP (Newport West and Islwyn).
The motion, which has already received cross-party signatures, celebrates The Bereavement Journey’s rapid growth and commends the communities running the programme as they seek to respond to the impact of bereavement on society.
Reflecting on the programme’s growth, Jane Oundjian says: “I began The Bereavement Journey® in 1995 to help grieving people in my church. I never imagined that it would one day become a tool so needed and appreciated by bereaved people far and wide.”
A Message from AtaLoss CEO, Yvonne Tulloch
“We’re celebrating today, knowing that there is still so much to do. Our ambition for The Bereavement Journey® is that it will be available in every community across the UK—alongside signposting to other vital support services. Too many individuals are living with unsupported and unresolved grief. Our mission is to change that.”
