The Bereavement Journey® Celebrated in Parliament
This week sees Ruth Jones, MP for Newport West and Islwyn publish an Early Day Motion in Parliament supporting and celebrating the contribution The Bereavement Journey® is now making in 400 locations across the country. This is an encouragement as we prepare to mark 30 years since the original The Bereavement Journey course in a few weeks’ time.
Early Day Motions (EDMs) are used by MPs in the Commons to draw the attention of the House to a particular issue, event or campaign.
The text of the Early Day Motion which Ruth has published reads:
"That this House celebrates that The Bereavement Journey community grief support programme, produced by AtaLoss, has doubled to running in 400 locations across the country since its relaunch last year; further celebrates 30 years since its start in original form; and commends the communities running the programme as they seek to respond to the cumulative impact of bereavement on society."
Welcoming this Early Day Motion, Yvonne Tulloch, Founder and CEO of AtaLoss said:
"I am grateful to Ruth Jones MP for publishing this EDM. For us, this further recognition of the work we are doing to offer grief support in local communities is important as we seek to make sure no-one is without support when they lose a loved one. The Bereavement Journey’s model of structured, volunteer-led community support is being welcomed far and wide since the programme’s revision in 2023. As a charity, we celebrate its rapid growth and it now running in 400 locations. However, this is the tip of its potential. We are a nation that has lost the art of supporting grief, with consequences that are costing individuals and the public purse greatly. We hope that before long The Bereavement Journey® will be available in every community across the UK – alongside signposting to other forms of support – to help with unresolved grief of decades, and ensure the wellbeing of those yet to be bereaved."
