Awareness

AtaLoss was established as a charity in 2016, to ensure that no one in the UK should be left without support when someone dies.

After decades of ‘death denial’ AtaLoss is pioneering in grief awareness, we want to change the culture of bereavement, to ensure that every bereaved person has timely and holistic support, to navigate their grief and changed circumstances for healthy outcomes.

UK society has lost the art of bereavement support leading to:

  • Ignorance around bereavement needs and the natural and necessary grief process

  • Unhelpful responses by individuals and institutions, exacerbating the trauma of bereavement

  • Belief that grief is limited to next of kin and the time of the death, and should be over in the following months

  • Avoidance or suppressing of grief

  • Default positions of counselling as the only means of support.

We believe unprocessed grief is contributing to many societal issues, including mental ill-health, physical ill-health, job-loss, relationship breakdown, under-achievement, homelessness, addiction and crime.

We are raising awareness so that grieving people can understand their own responses and receive compassionate and effective community support.

We do this by:

  • Being intentional about the media.

  • Advocating for change through our APPG.
